The Setting of Onward
Onward's Setting: Diverse Concepts and Rich Culture
The world of Onward was specifically designed to give players the freedom to explore a wide range of character concepts. The original setting centers around the politically neutral Kingdom of Ardellis, known for its diversity and openness. Connected to the farthest reaches of the world through an extensive network of tributaries and rivers, Ardellis thrives on trade, travel, and cultural exchange.
The bustling port city of Aerith serves as the kingdom's primary trade hub. It's a melting pot where races, cultures, imports, and exports flow freely. From merchants to refugees, travelers to criminals, Aerith is a city of constant change and growth, where the new is always arriving and the old is continually evolving.
In contrast, the pre-Alpha stage takes place in the inland village of Haven, a key stop for land-based trade between Aerith and Caeloth, the two capital cities of Ardellis. Although smaller and quieter than Aerith, Haven still sees its fair share of travelers, thanks to its strategic location on trade routes.
Ardelan culture as a whole embraces diversity and the unfamiliar, encouraging the acceptance of the strange and unique. This cultural openness provides players with countless opportunities to craft varied and imaginative character background, meant t support everything from unconventional ideas to foreign and mysterious roles.
Whether playing as dignitaries, outlaws, or travelers from far-off lands, players can find a realistic and immersive place in the world for their characters. This flexibility ensures that no matter how strange or unique the concept, Onward provides a framework where such characters can feasibly exist and thrive and an overall setting where change, oddities, and progression is a slow constant.
